KYL won in the series of 40 and under voices and was awarded the trophy of the best choir of the whole competition. The competition was held on Sat 30th of April in Cornwall, England.

The choir, directed by Matti Apajalahti, sang four different songs in four different languages; Jean Sibelius’s Humoreski, David Wikander’s Kung Liljekonvalje, Hugo Wolf’s Im Sommer and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s Cornish Lullaby, a piece composed by him for KYL for this exact purpose.

Over 60 choirs participated in the festival, and 14 choirs were in the series of 40 and under voices. Lubomir from Russia came second and Synergy from the UK third.

The victory was the second in a little over a year as KYL won the 5th International Leevi Madetoja Male Voice Choir Competition in April 2010.

Join KYL!

Are you interested in a hobby that can offer you great moments for the rest of your life? It makes no difference if you are a beginner or a black-belt-singer. KYL offers you a change to develop your voice and your social life and have fun in one of the best choirs on the planet.

KYL expects you to be musical and to have the right attitude. Prior choir experience is not required. Although KYL is the male choir of the Student Union of Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), you don’t have to be a student in our school to join the choir.

In order to get into the choir, you have to take part a short singing test, where we listen to you sing a song as well as some scales to determine the pitch of your voice. During the next academic year, there will be several concerts and other performances in groups of different sizes, practice sessions, training weekends, sauna evenings, lots of humor and much more. Choir rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 6 PM to 9 PM. If you wish to participate, please contact kyl(at)kyl.fi or KYL’s chairman Jussi Suominen.
